O'Grady's father is Jim O'Grady. Her mother, Jan, was a financial planner. She was raised by her parents who resided in Wheaton located in Illinois and was graduated in 1981, with a degree from the Wheaton North High School. Before shifting from Illinois to Los Angeles, she appeared in a variety of commercials. Her first assignment was modeling as a model for Montgomery Ward. She also featured in a variety of commercials. She made her debut on the big screen in the romantic comedy of 1988 She's Having a Baby, and then was cast in the regular role of ABC Drama China Beach opposite Dana Delany. She also appeared as a guest in several shows. She appeared in both independently produced and made-for-TV movies. Her debut role on television was as Donna Abandando on the ABC crime drama NYPD Blue. O'Grady was the long-haired secretary of the team between 1993 and 1996. Her nomination was to win an Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting actress in a drama series each year. Along with her castmates, she was awarded the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in an Drama Series in 1995.
